In the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) world, good teamwork is key to finishing projects on time and with high quality. That’s why collaborative learning is important in undergraduate education.
Augmented reality (AR) technology, which has advanced quickly in recent years, merges the real world with virtual environments. In our study, we created a design app using Microsoft HoloLens to help students learn architectural engineering design through teamwork. The AR app lets students work together on virtual architectural objects while talking to each other.
We tried out the AR app in two design studio courses with 19 students. Our study looked at how the AR app affected students’ involvement, engagement, learning, and comfort during teamwork. We also checked how students communicated by analyzing videos of their AR experience.
