Building Occupants Signal Synthesis

Professor Liu has received a $399,978 National Science Foundation grant for a three-year project aimed at integrating Augmented Reality (AR) into architectural design in both academia and industry. The project will develop and test AI-driven AR tools to enhance rapid prototyping and idea exploration in design studios at WPI and Drexel University.

In a WPI article, Professor Liu describes the potential power and benefit of these tools. “Architectural engineers rely on collaboration among architects, contractors, and other stakeholders,” he says, and “AI-empowered AR can revolutionize visual ideation and conceptual design during these collaborations. “For instance, prototyping and conceptual design could take place directly within the AR environment, simplifying the creative process and enhancing collaborative potential. Therefore, if WPI researchers are successful in developing AI-empowered AR, the technology could be tested in architectural firms, which could lead to innovative tools for industry professionals that enhance ideation, collaboration, and impact.
